When we are dreaming alone it is only a dream. When we are dreaming with others, it is the beginning of reality.

When Pang Sern Yong, our metrosexual group mate repeatedly bugged me on msn to post something. I was forced to jumpinto this post, cracking my head and scratching my scalp right now (dunno why it's so itchy ah) as to what should i write for Small Island Films.

Well, all i can think of is - the making of Small island films

Reflecting back, it all started with four Kan Chiong people who thought they can't form FYP teams! So these kia si four people sat down one day in MacDonalds' (shall not tell you which branch for fear of stalkers) and decided to sign an oath of honour that they will kill and die with one another for their FYP. And so it begins the journey of 4 dreamers.

Starting the journey with three other dreamers/crappers/artists in our own making has been fun, enjoyable, fun, enjoyable, fun, enjoyable... because people of Small Island Films respect, love and enjoy film- making.

Never once were project meetings boring.. :p

So hopefully, you sort of get our kind of group dynamics.. If you don't, then too bad. But if you seriously want to be part of this fun and crazy team of people, drop us an email at small.island.films@gmail.com and we'll let you know how you can be part of us!

We don't mind the following:
1) Sponsors
2) More sponsors
3) Helpers in any way
4) More sponsors

Supervisor

If you are an ardent follow of wuxia films and Hong Kong Cinema, then the name Stephen Teo will be all too familiar to you.

I've been a crazy fan of Hong Kong films, especially those by Wong Kar-wai. So imagine my elation when I realised that the school has managed to secure the services of the reknowned film scholar, Stephen Teo! Now this is the man whose books, thesis and reviews I have been reading for years and now this man is right here it's almost like a fanboy moment!

So everything is sort of surreal to me as it comes full circle, when Associate Professor Stephen Teo has accepted our invitation to be the supervisor for our thesis film. It is almost dreamlike for myself. I mean, imagine you have been reading his books and devouring his ideas and now, suddenly, he's the supervisor of your thesis film!

We are happy and proud and we are confident that we will learn a lot under his guidance.

Cheers!

“People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them, or that they’ll be unable to achieve them. We, their hearts, become fearful just thinking of loved ones who go away forever, or of moments that could have been good but weren’t, or of treasures that might have been found but were forever hidden in the sands. Because, when these things happen, we suffer terribly…

Everyone on earth has a treasure that awaits him. We… seldom say much about those treasures, because people no longer want to go in search of them. Later, we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. But, unfortunately, very few follow the path laid out for them- the path to their Personal Legends, and to happiness. Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place.”

Small Island Films

Small Island Pictures is an independent filmmaking group, founded by 4 undergraduates from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. We are currently in our Junior Year, reading Communication Studies at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information, and specialising in Broadcast & Cinema Studies.

In preparation for our final year thesis film, we have set up this blog to make this journey as memorable as possible, while recording and sharing our deepest and sincere passion for filmmaking.

We love the craft that is filmmaking, we really do. Honestly we've been dreaming about becoming filmmakers since we were young. But we acknowledge that we are no Roystan Tan or Boo Junfeng, and we have not won anything in any film festivals. Neither are our families rich enough to do our backing.

But even within the confines of our HDB flats, we believed that our sincerity can create magic. The magic that may not match your big-budget movies, nor the support of established filmmakers, but the magic that is our sincerity. And it is this very sincerity that has seen us broke our piggy banks, caught by the police (TWICE for trespassing), smashed a $15,000 camera into pieces, and have our dreams constantly burst.

But still, we press on. Because we are sincere about the magic of films and filmmaking. Because we love films, and we believe in being motivated by our heart more than anything else. Because we acknowledge that the real world may not be kind to daydreamers like us, and thus this may be the last time we will be making a film together, before we graduate and which some of us may be forced by circumstances to choose another route.

And with our sincerity, we thank you for visiting this humble blog and for giving 4 humble filmmaking wannabes a part of your time in your life.

Cheers!
